BY MICHELLE ETIENNE – Freshman Cole Raymond of Middletown said he is looking forward to his first Color Wars as a CHS student.
“[I expect a] day full of fun and athleticism,” Raymond said.
Freshman year is a year of many new experiences, and tomorrow, CHS freshmen will experience the annual Color Wars for the first time. But many freshmen said they are left in the dark about what Color Wars actually is.
Color Wars is an all-day field day and barbecue that includes many physical and nonphysical activities. All students are split into several teams of varying colors, and all are required to participate in at least one sporting event and one non-sporting event, according to SGA adviser Erin Wheeler.
Sporting events include soccer, 3v3 basketball, ultimate frisbee, kickball and Kan Jam. The non-sporting events include the annual art challenge and tech challenge, along with Pictionary, a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament and a limbo tournament, Wheeler said.
Events are held both outside on Wall High School’s fields and inside of CHS. Each year, seniors volunteer to be captains of teams several weeks before Color Wars. These captains are assigned a color and a randomly generated team, Wheeler said.
Freshman Kat Farah of Keansburg said she discussed Color Wars with upperclassmen and has a positive outlook on the event.
“I talked to a couple upperclassmen and they said it’s like field day, but more involved. I think it’s going to be a really cool event,” Farah said.
Freshman Ronan Leahy of Colts Neck said he is neutral about the day.
“I’m excited to see the soccer game, only because I’m playing in it,” Leahy said.
