The federal government was shut down on Oct. 1 after lawmakers in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate were unable pass a budget to continue its funding. After 16 days, a resolution in the Senate ended the shut-down and temporarily funded the government through Jan. 15.
Locally, the Marine Academy of Science and Technology was forced to postpone its information session for prospective students. The school is located on Sandy Hook which is a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, one of the casualties of the government shutdown.
“Students really need to experience the academic, environmental and social elements of our property of our property to appreciate the school,” Earl Moore, the principal of MAST said. However, he said the shutdown impacted that opportunity for hopeful students.
At Communications, students are required to participate in a mentorship program their senior year. For one marking period, they hold
an unpaid internship. Senior Maggie Trupio of Howell was furloughed from her internship at the office of Democratic Congressman Frank Pallone after all non-essential staff members were told not to come to work.
According to Trupio, after two weeks of doing homework for the last two periods every day, she found a new mentorship at Folio Art Glass in Colts Neck, NJ.
Trupio said that her message to congress is “Get your act together.”
