BY EMMA MCCAFFREY– Friday’s spirit week theme was Halloween and the lunch event was the annual Costume Contest. Students had the opportunity to compete in five categories: best group, best overall, most original, scariest, and funniest costume.
Juniors Shane Nolan of Bradley Beach and Victor Riveros of Long Branch danced their way to victory as Napoleon Dynamite and Pedro in the group competition. Nolan performed the famous dance from the film in front of the judges to secure a win for the class of 2016.
In the creative category, junior Cayla Harris of Manalapan impressed the judges with her costume as a character from pop art.
The class of 2016 emerged victorious yet again in the funniest category. Junior Nick Brennan of Middletown, dressed in a suit and a name tag that read “I’m sorry”, was the winner as a formal apology
Senior Cori Timmons of Tinton Falls won the scariest category as a ventriloquist, earning points for the class of 2015.
In the best overall category, sophomores Mark DiSpigna and Linda Badarracco of Lincroft, Matt Miller of Wall, Kathryn Willis of Tinton Falls, and Cate Esqueta of Eatontown won dressed as the characters of Up. The class of 2015 stuck to the theme of the Disney movie, which had earned them another win in Thursday’s pumpkin-decorating contest.
Many students were impressed with the costumes that competed. “You could really tell who spent more than 20 minutes on their costume,” said Christina Alfano of Middletown.
At the end of the day, the results of Spirit Week were announced. The class of 2018 came in 4th place with 82 points, followed by the class of 2015 and 2017 with 140 and 145 points respectively. The class of 2016 won with 200 points, winning their fifth spirit week of six in their time at CHS.
